Hi, I’m Charlie Oxley, a recent First-class Honours architecture graduate from the University for the Creative Arts Canterbury. I am currently seeking an architectural assistant part one role to start my career and continue my education. Thank you for looking at my work.

Having studied over the past 3 years I have learnt and developed skills which will be valuable to your company. These include extensive knowledge and application of Rhino 7, Grasshopper Autocad, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and V-Ray to name a few. The judicious use of these can be seen in my portfolio of projects. I also have a skilled model maker and sketcher and these can be particularly seen in all my projects, design diary’s.

This online showcase highlights some of my university work and a personal experimental project, The Elemental Cubes.

Some notable projects featured in this online showcase include, The Food Waste Factory, The Green Houses, Dead Space archive and a personal experimental project of mine called the elemental cubes.

The Food Waste Factory

This project called for a solution to the real issue of massive food waste in Milan. This was achieved by designing a facility to reuse food waste in a sustainable building which also provided community and commercial spaces. I wanted to prove that unused food does not need to be thrown away but can be reused and recycled in a multi-functional, mixed-use building. In this facility, restaurants utilise food waste in their dishes and a kitchen school teaches new chefs to cook efficiently with produce, minimising waste and recycling what cannot be used.

This project illustrates my skills - Rhino 7 for modelling, rendering using V-Ray and editing using Illustrator and Photoshop.

The Green Houses

A community-based project, Green Houses, was a design of twelve houses for a live-work community where residents grow produce from allotments situated on their rooves and sell it in the community market below their apartment. This project illustrates my design and modelling skills and the effective use of limited space for maximum effect.

Elemental Cubes

This project was created outside of my degree and whilst unfinished, demonstrates use of a different rendering software and my passion to keep creating. This independent exploration and development involved experimenting with lighting and different environmental effects.  It is the creation of cubes representing specific environments or elements and creating a design around them. The two completed cubes are Ice and Jade.

Alongside studying, I enjoy working on other personal projects and I’m currently developing a cassette tape rendered in the same fashion as the Elemental Cubes design.

I also climb regularly, which is physically and mentally demanding supporting relaxation away from work. It requires persistence and problem-solving skills as it demands the trying out of potential solutions and to learn from failure and success. This seeking of the ideal solution resonates with architectural design and I believe that climbing has taught me to be tenacious and creative. I am dyslexic and this has made studying harder but again, finding ways to manage this and embracing the benefits it brings has made me more open minded and determined to succeed.

Thank you for reading. Please contact me to discuss how I can be an asset to your firm. I’m passionate about architecture and excited for the next stage in my career.

The Dead Spaces

This involved the mapping of unused wasted spaces in the city of Canterbury, Kent and creating a space where the spaces are stored and developed into habitats for plant life to flourish. Throughout this project I deepened my knowledge of sustainability and honed research skills; working independently and exploring the subject deeply to gain a better understanding of the issues. This project was also where I developed my skills of using rendering software to add realism.

Modelling and Sketches.

Models and sketches are valued resources for representing designs and are included in this showcase enabling me to represent and demonstrate my knowledge of the projects. For example, the models enabled the concept of in the Dead Space project clearly showed the spaces and how these could be reclaimed into a buzzing green space which is difficult to explain in words.
